State Fair submission production continues. In addition to the pickles, kraut and juice, I'm also entering two pies and wheat bread. The pies are both two-crust, one is cherry and the other -- mixed berry pie.
Caption: Chester blackberries and blueberries. The last pie I made with straight blackberries (actually Marionberries) got runny. Since I'm making a mixed berry pie, I hope the high levels of natural pectin in the blueberries will stiffen the filling. Cross your fingers!
Tuesday is the big day. The pies and bread go to Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukee, the drop-off point for baked goods.
So, here's the schedule:
Sunday: make dough, hit Hillsdale Farmers Market for berries and cherries, pit cherries.
Monday AM: bake pies. Monday PM: bake bread. Yes, I'm coming home from work at 11 PM and making bread. It's the only way I can assure it's freshness on Judgement Day.
Tuesday: Submit items.
Let me sign off with a photo of the lovely cherries.
